Chaos shows the need to grow our railway – 24th January 2017

For two days, and for entirely unrelated reasons, the main lines from Kent to London have been in a state of chaos.

On Monday it appears that freezing fog caused trains to fail at Tonbridge and Dunton Green, delaying many services by more than an hour.

Today a freight train derailed just south of Lewisham station, blocking both the main line to Hastings and Ashford and several suburban services. Some routes were suspended, other trains diverted. A lot were delayed for up to two hours.

These major incidents were made worse by problems with the power supply at Tunbridge Wells and in the Hastings area.

Meanwhile, services today on the Uckfield Line were cancelled due to there being insufficient rolling stock.

The clear lesson is that we frankly do not have enough railway for the growing numbers living in the region. Is it not time to address this?
